Softeners for water
Water hardness (calcium and magnesium) is a problem. • An ion exchange
system is used to soften the water. The water leaving the softener contains
sodium compounds rather than calcium and magnesium.

• A common water softener has a resin ingredient that is converted to
calcium and magnesium zeolite and regenerated with salt or sodium chloride
for the zeolite.
Water should be treated in accordance with the manufacturer's
guidelines.
Allowable water hardness is typical. (Boilers with firetubes)
• 50-75 ppm for 100 psi steam; • 20 ppm for 200 psi steam
