Coal Fired Thermal Power Plant Operation and Maintenance Manual

A coal-fired power station, also known as a coal power plant, is a type of thermal power station that generates electricity by burning coal. There are around 8,500 coal-fired power plants in operation worldwide, with a total capacity of over 2,000 gigatons. They provide roughly one-third of the world's electricity yet cause a slew of illnesses and premature deaths, owing primarily to air pollution.

A fossil fuel power station is a coal-fired power station. Typically, the coal is pulverized before being used in a pulverized coal-fired boiler. The heat from the furnace transforms boiler water to steam, which is then utilized to spin turbines, which in turn generate generators. As a result, the chemical energy held in coal is turned into thermal energy, mechanical energy, and, finally, electrical energy.

Coal-fired power plants release about 10 Gt of CO2 each year, accounting for around one-fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions, and are thus the single most significant source of climate change. China generates more than half of the world's coal-fired electricity. In 2020, the total number of plants began to decline as they were retired in Europe and America, despite the fact that they were still being built in Asia, virtually entirely in China. Some stay lucrative since the costs to others resulting from the coal industry's health and environmental damage are not factored into the cost of generation, but there is a risk that newer units will become stranded assets. According to the UN Secretary General, OECD countries should stop using coal to generate power by 2030, and the rest of the world by 2040.
