Rig Check Inspection Forms

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) created Rig Check in collaboration with safety specialists from the oil and gas extraction industry. It consists of 35 inspection forms. The forms are intended for rig employees to utilize to document the inspection of tools and equipment usually found on rotary and workover rigs. Each inspection form offers guidelines for assessing and documenting the equipment's condition. Relevant government rules and industry suggested practices are given where applicable.

Rig Check inspection forms are an effective training tool for short-term personnel who are unfamiliar with the tools and equipment found on oil and gas rigs. Small businesses with limited safety and health resources may find Rig Check valuable for improving their HSE programmes.

Instructions

Ensure that each well has an emergency response strategy in place, complete with straightforward instructions for communication in the case of a rig-based issue. Medical crises, fire on the rig or site, gas release or loss of well control, and security breaches should all be covered by notification protocols. Most wells will have contingency plans in place that cover alerts for long-term incidents, such as notification of government authorities and independent well control experts. These eventualities can be noted in the working plan, but they should not complicate the action plan that has been presented.

LOCATIONS:

List the locations of any current emergency response plans that have been posted. These should be located at strategic areas such as the rig doghouse, change house, Rig Supervisor's office, Company Man's office, and rig camp.

Additionally, ensure that the response plan is posted somewhere emergency communications may occur, such as the Rig Supervisor's truck and the guard shack.
