The field of science which deals with the energies possessed by gases and vapours it known as thermodynamics. It also includes the conversion of these energies in terms of heat and mechanical work and their relationship with properties of system.

A machine which converts heat into mechanical work or vice versa it known as heat engine. The field of engineering science is deals with the applications of thermodynamics and it's laws to work producing and work absorbing devices in order to understand their functions and improve their performance it's known as thermal engineering.
