This book has been prepared to give inspecting engineers, welding engineers, designers, producers and purchasers of welded plant, an up-to-date under-standing of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods and their scope of application to welds and welded structures.

Non-destructive testing is a technology which is continually advancing and
it is necessary, at intervals, to update any published information on the
subject. Even the well established techniques such as magnetic crack detec-
tion or radiography show considerable advances when considered over,
say, ten-year intervals, and in the same period completely new techniques
can pass from the research laboratory phase into commercial industrial
use.

Because fabrication techniques such as welding require considerable skill, it
is inevitable that mistakes will occur, that flaws will be incorporated into the
material, and that therefore some post-fabrication testing will be essential to
discover any such serious flaws which may impair performance. Today, also,
there is a new emphasis on in-service inspection of fabricated structures and
on structure monitoring. Non-destructive testing is an inspection process
which forms part of the whole quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC)
scheme.
