I am constantly surprised while travelling throughout the world at how many organizations only have a general idea  about their equipment. They may not even know the amount of equipment they have of a particular type, let alone the precise characteristics and requirements. 

Maintenance Management is part of the maintenance science scenario and should be treated as such. It is critical in Maintenance Management that necessary information as applic  able to their plant and equipment is available so that  sound management policies are instigated; without this info  mation Management is unlikely to instigate sound policies.

As plant investments escalate (Nelson's Index) and downtime creates unacceptable loss of production, the "demand style  approach" in keeping plant available i.e. 'Fire Fighting* is recognised by perceptive management as another profit-draining area. Thus, a scientific management approach must be employed.
