In most plants, maintenance costs, as defined by standard plant accounting processes, make up a significant fraction of total operating costs. Traditional maintenance expenses (labour and materials) have risen dramatically in the United States during the last ten years. Domestic plants spent more than $600 billion in 1981 to keep their critical plant systems running. By 1991, the costs had risen to more than $800 billion, and by 2000, they were expected to reach $1.2 trillion. According to these studies, one-third of all maintenance dollars, or $250 billion, is squandered due to inadequate maintenance management systems.
